Five minutes later, Claire was sat at a table with Wilson in the small canteen. Carlisle was downstairs in the process of being transferred to the police station. One phone call had confirmed his alibi. The worst that would happen to him was that he would have his little revenue stream curtailed, at least until he became brave, or stupid enough to start up his little side business again.

“No go?” Nixon said over a sandwich, the other half held in his hand.

Claire turned to look at the agent who had just come in. She couldn’t help it, but something about his demeanor, the way he posed the question made her think he wasn’t overly disappointed that the man they had arrested was not the killer.

“No,” she replied. “Apparently, he was dealing ‘roids, anabolic steroids, out of the gym. Tasha turned a blind eye to it in return for a small cut. He’d thought we’d uncovered his little operation when we were digging around about Tasha’s death. Got the wrong end of the stick, panicked, and bolted. But he’s got an alibi. He’s not our man.”

“We should charge him for wasting our time,” Wilson said. He was as annoyed as Claire but was less good at hiding it. “Damn it,” he spat, confirming her thoughts.

Nixon nodded, chewing his sandwich. His cell rang. He shoved the rest of the sandwich in his mouth and walked to the door, the phone clamped to his ear.

Claire turned back to her partner, glad the distraction of the local agent was gone.

“Look, I know Carlisle was a blow out, but we still have something. Both victims had an interest in eastern beliefs. That ties in with what little else we have. The incense. The coins. We haven’t lost that. Let’s focus on those.”

“Yes, but what do they really give us?” Wilson said, frustration in his voice. “That’s something they had in common, but is it even that big of a link? We may as well say they shopped at the same convenience store. Plus, the incense? I just feel we are clutching at straws, Claire.”

Claire was silent for a minute. Thinking. Deciding which way to go. Then, slowly, she lifted her eyes up to those of her partner. “There is something else,” she said.

Wilson looked at her. Blinked. “Is this about what happened in the yoga studio before Carlisle came in? This is about the vision you had, isn’t it?”

She nodded. She was relieved that Wilson had come out with it first. Making it easy for her. Making her feel less like a lunatic.

“What did you see?” Wilson’s voice was gentle. For the first time, she felt he was actually on her side about what she was going through, what was happening to her. For the first time, she felt he actually believed that something weird was going on, not just that she was experiencing some strange symptoms caused by damage inside her brain.

“There was a silver box, large, this big, I guess,” she held her
